Rationale

Community Beach Clean Up

For this assignment we wanted to keep this project simple and straightforward, keeping our concentration on the audience, which is the community.  Sticking with this idea we created a series of advertisements for the event, such as posters, flyers, t-shirts, and a website.  We created a bright and fun event that consist of bright blue colours and simple but fun illustrations to attract the attention of all age groups in the community from children to elderly.
This would create a beach clean up where families and locals can meet up together and join as one to clean up their communities’ larger backyard.  We want this to result in the community wanting to continue to clean their environment and keep it an open place for families and locals.  At first we tried to take a rhetorical approach using the idea of perception vs reality but the more we experimented with it the more we realized it didn’t work well with the targeted audience so we created a new idea which lead us to focus on a fun and exciting approach.   To portray this we made the products in this assignment provide a simple narrative of the community coming together to clean up their backyards for their families and future.

T-shirt Finals

For the final we decided to go with this design because of the simple use of colour as well as the texture created.

Example of front and back of t-shirt

Overall when designing this t-shirt for the event we wanted to keep in mind to create an object that could be remembered but also not add to the rubbish that is already present at the beach.  We decided to use the collection of illustrations used for the poster and other items to make the image represent the community once again and also create a simple but nice image.  The use of texture on the strips at the bottom of the t-shirt make it look like sea hopefully relating it back to the cleaning of the bay.  There is also the logo on the back of the image as seen in the image above.

Deciding on the final

After exploring gradients and chaining the style of the poster, we asked for feedback in class and these were the top two, the original one we chose and the one with a subtle gradient of white on blue. We are not sure which one we prefer.

Playing with gradients

After talking to our tutor I changed the gradients and played around with the colours that we could use, I think that the first one works the best, it's more subtle.

I like this one

Too dark at the bottom (mush at the bottom of the sea)
Too white, the images get lost

Just no.

Too bright

Flyer and Poster after feedback

May be too green, makes it seem too dirty? Or is that what we want. Not sure if it sends the message of dirty so that it's unappealing or if simple clear blue makes it seem like this is what we want it to be (clean)

More T-shirt Experiments

The tutor and everyone we talked to seemed to like the ones with minimal colours

Might lean towards this one because of the use of gradient and the images stand out more/

Feedback from Matt

For week six we discussed with Matt the overall design of our poster, there were no large changes made but he discussed with us the idea of adding a gradient and also changing the location of the date and the event place and the font.

Initial Concept
He also gave us the idea of adding a banner to the top, Zoe will do some drawings and post them soon.

Experiments with T-shirts

So for our third item we are experimenting with a T-shirt that can be worn for the event and be taken home as a reminder.  This also presents an idea that won't create an item that will create litter at this event which is meant for cleaning the bay.
So far I have been just experimenting with the design of the shirt mainly with colour.
